The Renal
Nutrition Group provides a forum for dietitians working, or
interested in the field of renal medicine to meet, discuss
ideas and projects and to promote this particular area of
dietetics.
We currently have 150 members and to gather and disseminate
information quickly, we have 12 regional representatives who
can email the RNG members in their area and collate responses.
The group meets twice yearly and aims to make the meetings a
combination of group business, specialist speakers and
original dietetic contributions.
The
objectives of the Renal Nutrition Group are:
°
To provide a
networking opportunity for all dietitians working in the field
of renal medicine.
°
To promote
the specialist area of renal nutrition to other dietitians and
to other disciplines working in renal medicine.
°
To liaise
with other health Professions involved in the care of renal
patients. e.g. doctors, renal nurses, pharmacists, social
workers.
°
To play an
active role in the programme for the annual national
multidisciplinary conference, The British Renal Symposium.
°
To promote
pre- and post-registration education of dietitians in renal
nutrition.
°
To act as a
voice for British renal dietitians on National and
International committees.
Background
to development of BRS-RNG webpages
The National
Service Frameworks, and new initiatives regarding Peer Review
and prescribing by dietitians are all emphasising the need for
dietitians to ensure that:
1.
we are providing a service to patients which is
based on sound knowledge of best practice,
2.
all patients are treated equally,
3.
we are monitoring and reviewing our work regularly
4.
we are providing a cost effective service
In order to update RNG members on the work that
is being done by other renal dietitians and relevant
specialists throughout the country we have developed a website
which will provide the following information:
·
Audit and
research carried out (the abstract will be available)
·
Resources
available (diet sheets in other languages, cookery books,
learning tools for patients and staff etc)
·
Special
interests within the renal field
·
Willingness
to give talks on particular areas.
It will be
possible to search the site for a particular topic e.g
phosphate education. The details of audits or research carried
out in this areas – by UK dietitians, the resources
available (diet sheets, teaching aids etc) and the dietitians
with a particular interest in this area, will be available.
Hopefully this site will be a useful starting point for
renal professionals wanting to perhaps carry out their own
audit / research or develop their own teaching information. As
a lot of this information isn’t published elsewhere, it may
mean there is less time spent ‘ re-inventing wheels’ and
may encourage interdisciplinary and multi-centre projects .
