Climate change presents the biggest challenge to 21st century health services. As the NHS commits itself to meet the Climate Change Act's target of 80% carbon reduction by 2050, one thing is clear: less of the same is not the answer. A transformation in clinical practice itself is required.

The Campaign for Greener Healthcare is a small dynamic team working with the NHS and other partners to transform healthcare for a sustainable future. Independent, but with extensive experience of the NHS, we are in a unique position to network with NHS trusts and specialties, as well as external organisations in both the health and the environmental sectors. We work with experts to achieve sustainability in all areas of NHS activity through
  • clinical transformation
  • knowledge
  • sustainability as a management priority
  • literally greening the NHS estate.

Clinical Transformation

Analysis of the NHS carbon footprint shows that even if hospitals were fully powered by renewable energy, total emissions would only be reduced by one-fifth. Other solutions are needed to tackle the 18% of carbon arising from staff and patient travel, or the 60% from purchased goods and services (mainly pharmaceuticals and medical supplies).

The Green Renal Programme

The Campaign for Greener Healthcare has chosen to work with clinical specialties, because of their strengths as multi-professional communities focused on the care of specific patient groups. Specialties are uniquely placed to integrate sustainability - from design of the clinical pathway to organisation and delivery of care. The first specialty we are working with is RENAL.

For more than a decade Vitalpulse have been the acknowledged experts in renal computing.  Their work with Renal Registries, UK Transplant and Renal Patient View are well known, and their software interfaces with laboratories, PAS and dialysis equipment involves them with almost every renal unit in the UK.

Now their VitalData Clinical Information System is being deployed across the country, having been selected as the system of choice for 5 major renal installations in 2009. Success of the product is attributed to its configurability, ease of use and competitive price, as well as the company’s profound understanding of user needs. VitalData is based on an industry standard SQL database, within a sophisticated yet intuitive graphical Windows environment. Commissioning includes the migration of all historic patient data from the system it replaces. Laboratory, demographic and dialysis machine interfaces are available, and integration with Microsoft Office products. VitalData remains flexible so that it can accommodate evolving requirements and standards of the National Renal Dataset.

Vitalpulse also provides on-going software support for Proton systems and has recently established a new dedicated customer support service and help line.
