About Us

The Association of Renal Managers was formed in 1969, and is the only forum that provides a way to share experience and knowledge to all types of managers within the renal field.

The ARM aims to provide support to renal managers within the NHS by:
  • Encouraging online discussions with other members about every day issues and challenges
  • Widening your networking abilities by being in touch with other colleagues in other renal units
  • Benefiting by sharing knowledge and asking peers and colleagues in similar roles about their experiences of issues and concerns
  • Providing two free of charge ARM meetings per year - the meetings are fully funded/sponsored with relevant educational and business sessions
  • Benefiting the service to patients by contributing as part of the ARM to the BRS Council, Kidney Alliance, Renal Information Exchange Group and other projects at a national level

Biographical Profile:

I have worked within the NHS for the last 29 years, starting as a pupil nurse in Belfast, where I undertook a combined course of mental health, learning needs and general nursing.
On moving to England, I worked in St Georges and undertook my conversion course.
In 1991 I completed my renal course at Guy's and worked in the children's ward for a year before returning to adult nursing at King's College Hospital.
My first charge nurse post was on the renal ward at St Georges followed by 6 years in the new dialysis unit. During my time at St Georges, I undertook my degree in Professional studies in Education and after completing this moved to Brighton as a lecturer/practitioner in a shared posting with Brighton University and BSUH.
I undertook my post-graduate diploma in management and clinical studies at Masters level, returning to clinical practice firstly as matron and then as service manager.
Over the years I have seen many changes and advancements in the care of patients and their families and firmly believe that the patient comes first and transparency of goals is the best foot forward in acheiving a service which is value for money.

Biographical Profile:

I have worked in the NHS for the last 19 years. I originally started as a temporary medical secretary having left the banking industry. After two years of temp work I decided that I would apply for permanent posts within the NHS.
I gained my first permanent post at Sussex Kidney Unit in March 1995. After four years of working as a PA for a Consultant Nephrologist I moved into my first managers role as Administration Manager.
As things changed throughout the NHS in March 2009 I successfully gained the role of Patient Access Manager, again for the same department. My present role involved managing all A&C staff from secretaries to ward clerks, 18 week reporting, coding, managing study and annual leave for consultants and clinic diary management to name just a few.
I completed the Institute of Leadership Management (ILM) Certificate in First Line Management (Level 3) in July 2005.
My next ambition would be to complete a CIPD (The Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) qualification.
